STIMULANT FOR NEWCOMERS

It is  said that one cannot truly be a Christian and a successful lawyer. I dare to say that such a hasty generalization is a product of an improper appreciation of who a lawyer really is and What the legal profession expects of a lawyer.
Frankly speaking, there is no rule in the legal profession that encourages a Lawyer to compromise.
In-fact:

Rule 4 of the RULES OF PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT FOR LEGAL PRACTITIONERS IN NIGERIA (RPC) urges' Lawyers to be f air and candid.
Rule 16(b) and 17 of the same rule places a duty on Lawyers to avoid sharp practices.
Rule 49(b) further imposes the solemn duty of honesty.

On the question as to whether a lawyer should defend an accused who has confessed the commission of a crime? I am persuaded that none of our "`case file" was good enough, yet Jesus still opted to defend us. In such cases, the law does not expect, nor permit us to tell lies.

lnfact, rule 9(a) of the RPC above is both instructive and self explanatory, to wit: "It Is the right of the lawyer to undertake the defense of a person accused of a crime regardless of his personal opinion as to the guilt of the accused; otherwise, innocent persons, victims only of suspicious circumstances might be denied proper defense..."
In addition, Rule 9(b) states: "A confidential disclosure of guilt alone does not require a withdrawal from the case, However, after a confidential disclosure of facts, clearly and credibly showing guilt, a lawyer should not present any evidence inconsistent with those facts, He should never offer testimony which he knows to be false."
The above rule clearly encourages lawyers to take up cases despite their personal idiosyncrasies. Indeed, the rule is commendable because mere suspicion or accusation may not be tantamount to committing of crime.

In addition, the rule forbids presenting evidence known to be false. This is clear a testimony of the fact that the profession itself offers a high standard for would-be lawyers. For God's part, He expects the best from his children. Nothing short of righteousness. So whether you are a Christian carpenter or a Christian trader, it is not really an easy task. There are challenges to face.
For a Christian Lawyer, the bible says that "the law is good if a man uses it lawfully" So a Christian lawyer must obey the spirit of God; he must strive to live up to God s standard. God appreciates his children who yield to his voice by going out to rescue the perishing.
The question now is: if the children of God do not practice law. Who else will be able to meet the divine requirements and qualities expected of a lawyer? Who will go for us? This profession is not for compromising Christians. Never! It is for determined people. People who appreciate and desire to live according to God s precepts. The bible puts this poser in Galatians 3:21: "Is the law then against the promise of God? God forbid." This shows that the law has a role in God's plan for our salvation.
In-fact, the imperfect state of the law reveals the need for righteousness in Christ. To my mind, Christ is the epitome of a true Law."

Consequently, the law of the lord can only be known, practiced and maintained through submitting to Christ. Many Christian lawyers and Judges have made it! We can make it too.

Dear reader, I want to end by saying that you won't make a mistake if you identify with CLASFON. The truth is that you must choose between being a Christian and being a Compromiser.
